MBR Killer Loop Competition

A few years ago MBR mountain biking magazine ran a competition in the UK. The competition involved riding 13 "Killer Loops" in 1 year. Each month a new Killer Loop was published and riders had to complete the loop taking a photograph at a certain landmark on each ride to prove it had been completed.

The prizes included mountain biking trips with Rocky Mountain Adventures to California, 2 Rocky Mountain Full suspension mountain bikes and lots of other excellent goodies.

Good odds?

Kate, Chris and Glenn decided that the number of people who were likely to complete all of the rides would be very low giving them a good chance of winning.

Over many months they spent weekends driving all over the country staying in B&Bs and clocking up hundreds of miles on their bikes to complete the loops.

Loop locations:

  • North Downs
  • South Downs
  • Lancashire
  • Lake District
  • Quantocks
  • Dartmoor
  • Exmoor
  • South Wales
  • North Wales
  • Northumbria
  • Peak District
  • North Yorkshire
Guest riders

Although Kate, Chris and Glenn completed all of the Killer Loop rides, they were often accompanied by other members of the team. Dave C and Dave B made several appearances in order to support the Loopers and to ride in some new areas of the UK.

Mission Complete

Once all the rides were complete, the photographs of the 3 were collated and sent off to MBR with their entries. Several months passed with no news of the competition. Eventually the closing date came and went and the results were published.

Of thousands of MBR readers, only 37 people completed all 13 of the routes! Unfortunately our trio didn't win the prizes which all went to one winner. A fact that still hits a raw nerve now! They did however all receive a "Killer Loop Hero" T-shirt.

Two questions remain:

  1. Was it worth all the effort?
  2. Did Kate not realise how daft that helmet looked?!

Only the Killer loop trio can answer that.
